Textual Analysis - Double Page Spread 3

On this particular double page spread, a series of images are what take up a large section of it leaving only a small part for the text. The images are all different shots of the band 'Avenged Sevenfold' playing their instruments and in concerts. This gives the audience a idea of what the article is going to be about as well as adding colour and interest to the page. The colours on the images are all varied contrasting from reds to blues and everything in between.

The people that are in the band all have similar clothes which is tank tops and dark trousers. They also have tattoos on their arms which is iconic of 'thug like' behaviour which reflects the bands personality and the type of music that they create. The impression I get off the images are that the band plays heavy metal/rock music and possibly scream music.

The article only takes up around quarter of the double page spread and doesn't appear to be jam packed with information like a lot of double page spreads are. The colour of the text is also the original colour of black which could have been possible used to relate to the band and their music that they play. There are also small sections of red text within the article which could be iconic of violence once again relating back to the band.

Textual Analysis - Double Page Spread 2

On this double page spread, the image takes up half of the double page spread. The imageof the band tells the audience that they are relaxed and laid back as they are laid on a bed and wearing casual clothes. They are also surrounded by posters which are all iconic of teenagers and their life which is what the band name is. Teenagers are thought of as being lazy and laid back with not a care in the world but like to dress smart to impress people, the band show the audience this by the image that is given off which all relates back to their band name.

The article only takes up quarter of the page on the right hand side and is in black on a white background which allows it to stand out and make it readable for the audience. Within the section where the article is, there is an image which will relate back to the article and be part of what is being spoken about. There is also a small section that is in blue which is an important quote from the article and this is signified by highlighting in a bright blue colour.

On the far right hand side of the page, there is a small section that has its own masthead that reads 'Everyone's Talking About'. This small section has nothing to do with the article and is basically a small piece of information about other bands. We can tell that this doesn't play a part in the article due to the fact that it is a black backgroundwith white text which is the complete opposite to the colours used for the article.

The colours that are used on the double page spread are mainly blues, blacks and whites. The blue colour that is used is quite bright and stands off the page which is a good way of attracting attention and making the page look interesting and not dull. The connotations of the colour blue are generally sad and upset but for this front cover I do not think that this is what is intended it is jsut to make the page look good.

Textual Analysis - Double Page Spread 1

This double page spread taken from Q magazine is all about the hit artist Lily Allen who appears to be telling her story about how she feels she isn't an attention seeker she is just honest. The masthead on this double page spread is very bold and along with the main image, takes up around 2/3 of the page. The white text placed on a square/jagged background allows the text to stand off the page dramatically. Also, the fact that the text differentiates between upper and lower case reflects Lily Allen's feelings about the article,up and down. The black background that is quite jagged is also quite threatening in its appearance which appears to be iconic of Lily Allen and her personality.

The image of Lily Allen on this double page spread appears to be rebellious and 'cocky' in the way that she is posing. Her facial expression comes across quite arrogant which is backed up by the fact she has her hands on her hips and is leaning forward putting herself in a dominant position. Her costumes also accompanies this as the fact she is wearing a red checkered shirt connotates violence and is quite a threatening colour and including the fact that she is wearing a chain necklace is stereotypical of being violent and being 'gangster like'.

The text that is on this double page spread doesn't take up very much space at all as the masthead and the image are very dominant on this page. The text is in a simple black colour that is legible for the consumer as it stands out on the white background.

Conventions Of A Double Page Spread

Masthead: The masthead tends to be big and bold and jumps of the page by using a series of techniques such as bright colours, bold and big text or by simply placing it on a plain background so it stands out a great deal more. The masthead of a double page spread is more than likely the main cover line on the front cover of a magazine there for the masthead must be related to what is said on the over of the magazine. This also informs the audience about what the article is about so they can then go on to read the article getting a general idea of what to expect.

Article: The article is probably the most important aspect of the double page spread as that is what everybody would expect to see and is also the article that the main cover line is generally about. The article informs the audience about certain events that have taken place and a reporter has made a story about. The text usually takes up a large quantity of the page and is accompanied by an image which relates to the story.

Image: Images are always contained within double page spread as they relate to the article that has been written about the person that stars in the image. The celebrity will usually pose in a certain way with a certain costume, setting and props in order to give off the image that is related to the article which is important otherwise the article and the picture would not make sense if they was placed together.

Page Numbers: The page number ison the page for a simple reason, it allows the consumer tonotice which page they are on and makes it a great deal easierfor themto find their desired page.

Textual Analysis - Front Cover 3

This Q contents page is unusual compared to other music magazine contents pages. The image we can see provides as a background for the contents page on which the cover lines and page numbers are listed. The image connotates to us that the man is serious about being in the magazine or the main cover line that he is related to is serious towards him as a person. The colours of the image are all dark and plain colours which all relates to the expression on his face which gives off a serious vibe towards the audience. The costume that he is wearing are all casual but smart clothes that could reflect his personality and thoughts at the moment.

The colour of the text that is used all relate to the iconic colours of Q magazine. Using red, white and black allows the text to become more apparent to the consumer drawing their attention to it so they are able to notice the cover lines and the page reference numbers that are placed next to them. What appears to be the main cover line is placed on a red background which connotates excitement as well as drawing the audiences attention to the main cover line

Textual Analysis - Contents Page 2

On this particular contents page, I personally think that it is being represented in a formal and exciting way due to the amount of imagery that is contained within it. The one large image and the accompanying five smaller images are all key ways in which the contents page appears friendly and formal. The colours are all varied going from blues to reds and everything in between which keeps the readers attention as they don't get bored by a simple plain page. The images all have cover lines and page reference numbers contained within them or close by which informs the consumer that they are all related to different stories and where to actually find the stories if you wish to do so.

All the article names are listed down the right hand side of the page and are in colours that connotate danger which is the yellow and black colours. The colours stand out off the background which informs the consumerwhat articles are on what page.

Textual Analysis - Contents Page 1

On this particular contents page, NME represent it in the same way which practically all contents ages are presented in all different magazines. The use of the big image in the centre of the way page relates back to the main headline which appears to be 'THE END OF THE ASTORIA' which is also accompanied by a page reference number and a small caption of detail which informs the target audience what the headline is about. The image also makes the contents page more interesting as it gives the audience something to look at instead of a list of headline titles.

The colour that is used on the contents page is fairly varied. The colours red, black and white are the dominant colours on the contents page but are accompanied by a few other splashes of colour. The yellow colour for the subscription section that is used stands out from the page which is obviously intended to grab the consumers attention and is also a way for the institution to generate more money as it uses an imperative to persuade the customer to subscribe for the magazine. Doing this could also be a great way of making the magazine more public due to the fact that if other people pick up the magazine and decide they like it, they are more than likely to subscribe to it as well.

The listing down the left hand side is a rather long list of several different bands that is presented to us in red writing. Having a long list of bands would be one way of informing the consumer of what current brands are 'on the market' or help them identify a band. This could also be used to inform the audience about what bands are contained in the magazines. The colour of the text is red which connotates the idea of excitement as well as stand out on the white background that goes with it. Standing next ot eh band names are several page numbers that are in a black colour which signify the importance of them if the audience is looking for a particular band. Having the page numbers is a great way fro the consumer to skip to certain pages that they desire.

The masthead that sits at the top of this page reads 'NME THIS WEEK' which is in big bold letters that stand out off the black background. The word 'NME' is in a red colour where as the rest of the text is in white which is for the simple fact that it is stating what the name of the magazine is and how important the name is for the magazine as it is its main icon.

Conventions Of A Contents Page

Article Names: Article names play a big part on a contents page as they tell the audience what they will see in the certain issue of a magazine allowing them to make a decision whether they want to buy it or make a decision on which article they want to read if they don't want to read the full magazine. All types of magazines have article names in them because if they didn't then the magazine wouldn't make any logical sense as you wouldn't have much idea what the article is about and whether you are even reading thesame or a different article.

Page Reference Numbers: Page reference numbers are generally found next to teh article names so the consumer knows which page to turn to for a particular article that they want to read about. It is a quick and efficient way of finding certain articles rather than flicking through the magazine looking for what you want.

Images: Images are frequently used on contents pages as they relate back to the article names and what is in the magazine, the images also add colour to the contents page. The colours that are contained in the contents page usually relate back to the colours on teh front cover in order to keep a theme going that is suitable for the magazine and suitable for the intended target audience.

Subscriptions: On a contents page there is sometimes a subscription section in which the consumer can subscribe to the magazine so that they don't miss any of the issues rather than just going to the shop and picking them up randomly, they can have them delivered to their houses which is sometimes and easier way for people to buy this magazine. In the subscription there will generally be contact numbers or forms of addresses so that the consumer is able to ring/email or send letters to the company.
